Unit I — The Question and the Method
An argument has premises (the reasons offered) and a conclusion (the claim they are meant to support). Being able to separate them is often the whole job: many disagreements dissolve once both sides can say which statement is doing the supporting.
Deductive arguments aim to guarantee the conclusion: if the premises are true and the form is valid, the conclusion must follow. Inductive arguments aim to make the conclusion probable. Most historical reasoning is inductive, which is why demands for proof in this area are misplaced.
Two words worth keeping straight. An argument is valid when its form is good. It is sound when it is valid and its premises are true. A perfectly valid argument built on a false premise is worthless, so knowing which one is under dispute tells you which reply to make.
Ad hominem. Rejecting an argument by attacking the person making it. Facts about the speaker are usually irrelevant to whether the reasoning works.
Straw man. Restating an opponent's view in a weakened form and defeating that. The real position is untouched, and anyone who knows it will discount everything else you say.
False dilemma. Presenting two options as the only options. Common in worldview discussion, where several positions are usually available.
Genetic fallacy. Judging a claim by where it came from rather than by the evidence for it. This cuts both ways: a claim is not false because it appears in a religious text, and not false because it appears in a secular one.
Consider this argument: this book is true because the book says it is true. The form is circular — the conclusion is smuggled into the premise — so the argument fails.
Now notice exactly what has and has not been shown. A fallacy is a defect in an argument. It is never a disproof of the conclusion. A true claim can be defended badly, and pointing out that one argument for a claim is circular leaves the claim itself exactly where it was.
This distinction is why the rest of this course exists. Christians have historically argued from outside evidence — manuscripts, non-Christian writers, testimony, historical reasoning — precisely so the case does not rest on the text's claim about itself. If someone shows you that one of your arguments is circular, the right response is to thank them and reach for a better argument, not to defend the bad one.
The principle of charity says: interpret the other person's argument in its strongest reasonable form before replying. This is a reasoning discipline, not politeness. Answering the strongest version is the only way to find out whether your own position survives — and a reply that defeats only a weak version convinces nobody who knows the strong one.
The burden of proof falls on whoever makes a claim. Note that this applies in both directions. Someone who asserts that the accounts were fabricated has made a positive claim and taken on a burden; they are not merely asking questions.
A practical test for the rest of the course: can you state the opposing view so accurately that someone holding it would say yes, that is what I think? If not, you are not ready to answer it.
1. Identify the premise and conclusion: The tomb was empty, and no one produced a body, so something unusual happened.
2. Write a straw-man version of a view you disagree with, then write the strongest version. What changed?
3. Explain why showing an argument is circular does not show its conclusion is false.
4. Narration. Name the four fallacies from this lesson and give a one-sentence example of each.
1. Premises: the tomb was empty; no body was produced. Conclusion: something unusual happened. Note this is inductive — it makes the conclusion reasonable, not certain.
2. Accept any pair. The point is that the strong version is harder to answer, which is exactly why it is the one worth answering.
3. A fallacy is a defect in the reasoning offered. The conclusion may still be true and may be supported by some other argument entirely.
