What Happens in This Episode?
Following Circe's instructions, Odysseus sails to the boundary of the dead and performs the rites that allow the shades to speak. The episode is called the nekuia, the summoning of the dead.
Tiresias tells Odysseus how to reach home: avoid the cattle of Helios, restrain the crew, and expect hardship in Ithaca. Odysseus also meets his mother, Anticleia, and learns what his absence has cost his family.
The famous dead complicate the idea of glory. Achilles, greatest warrior of the Iliad, says he would rather be a living servant than king among the dead. Odysseus leaves with knowledge, but also with sorrow.
