Common questions about how this typing test works, what scores to expect, and how it fits into a classical-homeschool routine.
WPM means 'words per minute,' calculated as (correct characters typed รท 5) รท minutes elapsed. The 'divided by five' is the standard convention โ one 'word' counts as five characters, including spaces and punctuation. Your accuracy is the percentage of typed characters that match the target text.
Rough guidelines: ages 6โ9 around 10โ20 WPM, ages 10โ13 around 25โ40 WPM, ages 14+ around 40โ60 WPM. Adults typically land between 50 and 80 WPM. At younger ages the goal is touch-typing technique โ using all ten fingers without looking at the keyboard โ not pure speed.
This is a free typing test with no login, no email, and no account required. We don't track who took the test or what your score was. If you want to save progress over time and unlock certificates, the full typing program at /typing-practice offers that โ also free, but with an optional account.
Yes โ take it as many times as you want. Each run pulls fresh sentences in random order, so you won't memorize them. After finishing, click 'Try Again' to start a new test immediately.
English mode uses common literary sentences in rotation. Latin mode uses simple classical Latin sentences โ same skill (accuracy + speed at the keyboard), but classical-homeschool students can reinforce vocabulary while they type. Both modes count toward the same WPM measurement.
The typing test needs a physical keyboard. On phones (screens under 640px) we redirect you to our Daily Quest game instead โ typing on a touchscreen isn't the same skill. iPad with a Bluetooth keyboard works fine.
