A plain-English guide to the chants and sayings students hear online: what they mean, when to use them, and where they can mislead you.

Name, of, to/for, target, from/with/by, calling.
That is the useful version of the case order: Nominative, Genitive, Dative, Accusative, Ablative, Vocative. Say the endings in order, but think of the sentence job at the same time.
A random sentence can help you remember the order, but a meaning-based mnemonic helps you parse real Latin. Use this chain: Name, of, to/for, target, from/with/by, calling.

The familiar line rosa, rosae, rosae, rosam, rosa is not just a string of sounds. It is the singular first-declension pattern in case order. The plural line follows the same order.

Many classroom chants use this five-case order and leave out the vocative because the vocative often matches the nominative. The final rosa in the singular chant is the ablative singular; with macrons, it has a long final a.
Quick clue: -am and -as are first-declension accusative endings. If you see puellam or rosas, ask whether that noun is the direct object or the destination of motion.
A noun is usually listed with its nominative and genitive singular. The genitive ending tells you the declension family.

Nom, Acc, and Voc are the same; neuter plurals usually end in -a.
If you see bellum as a second-declension neuter noun, the nominative and accusative singular are both bellum. The plural nominative and accusative are bella. Some third-declension i-stem neuters use -ia.
The nominative can disguise itself; the genitive tells the truth.
rex looks like it might have an x-stem, but rex, regis gives you reg-. From there, regem, rege, reges, regum, and regibus make sense.
1st = -ae, 2nd = -i, 3rd = -is, 4th = -us, 5th = -ei.
When a dictionary gives puella, puellae, the second form is not extra decoration. It tells you the declension and usually gives the stem.
This saying explains why forms of aliquis, aliqua, aliquidoften lose the ali- after four small words: si (if), nisi (unless), num (whether), and ne (lest).
si quis venit
Translate like: if anyone comes.
si qua puella venit
Read qua as the form you would expect from aliqua: if any girl comes.
The letters are not literally hiding in the text. The point is practical: after those trigger words, the shorter quis/quid/qua forms often carry the indefinite meaning you would expect from the ali- form.
Older school poems often group ablative prepositions together. For a beginner, use the list below first, then add special cases as your textbook introduces them.
Core ablative set
Many chants also include words such as clam, palam, or subter. Those can be useful later, but they are easier to mishandle. Keep this beginner list sturdy before adding edge cases.
When a poem says STATE not MOTION, it means in, sub, and super take the ablative when the noun is at rest, but the accusative when there is motion toward or into.
