Aeolus, keeper of the winds, receives Odysseus hospitably and gives him a remarkable gift: a bag containing the storm winds. With only the west wind free, Ithaca comes within sight.

Odysseus is exhausted and falls asleep. His men, suspicious that he has kept treasure for himself, open the bag. The released winds drive the fleet away from home and back to Aeolus.

Aeolus refuses to help again, concluding that the gods must be against Odysseus. The episode is one of the poem's sharpest pictures of mistrust inside a community.
