WHY THE ODYSSEY
The story the West never stopped telling.
For nearly three thousand years, Homer’s Odyssey has been the model every later adventure is measured against — the long road home, the clever hero, the monsters that are really tests of character. To read it is to hold the source of Western storytelling in your hands. A student who knows Odysseus reads Dante, Tennyson, and Joyce more deeply.
It rewards a thinking reader, not just a fast one. The Odyssey is built from real questions a classical student is ready to wrestle with: What does a person owe their household and their guests? Is cunning a virtue or a kind of lying? What is a homecoming worth, and what does it cost? Odysseus is admirable and flawed in the same breath — and the poem trusts the reader to notice both. Working through his choices is practice in moral reasoning; that is the classical claim, and it is an honest one.
